Sincona sale 90, lot 1795

This specimen was lot 1795 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 7,500 CHF (about US$9,911 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Schlick, Grafschaft, Heinrich IV. 1612-1650. 1/2 Taler 1627, Plan. Mit dem Titel von Ferdinand II. Münzmeister Jan Candler von Atzenzoll (1627-1641). Äusserst selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Feine Patina. Kleine Kratzer. (Austrian states, county of Schlick, Henry IV, 1612-50, half thaler of 1627, Plan mint, struck in the name of Ferdinand II. Extremely rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Nicely toned, Small scratches.)"

The counts of Schlick in Bohemia were the original proprietors of the mint at Joachimsthal, where the first "thalers" were struck. However, by the seventeenth century the counts had long since lost the mine and only a few scarce pieces were struck. This example realized thirteen times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 14.37 g.

Catalog reference: KM 7, Smetana/Jakymenkova C20, Slg. Donebauer -. Fiala 203.
