SB626-11227r.jpg

This specimen was lot 11227 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €69 (about US$80). The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. 6 Schilling, 1724-BH. Tönning Mint. Karl Friedrich. NGC AU-50. Nice example with minimal wear. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." The dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp were a cadet branch of the house of Oldenburg, which ruled Denmark. They divided the rule of Schleswig-Holstein between them and the history of the duchies is the story of their quarrels and feuds. Charles Frederick (b. 1700, r. 1702-39) was the last duke to rule. The duke (or rather, his regent) sided with Sweden during the Great Northern War and saw his domain ravaged and occupied by the Danes. Fleeing to Sweden, he was a claimant to that throne on the death of Charles XII in 1718 but lost out to Ulrika Eleonora. He moved to Russia, marrying a Russian princess and becoming the father of tsar Peter III. One thaler was 48 schilling or 384 pfennig. This type was struck 1722-26 and is not rare although the 1724 is the common date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon, 24 mm diameter, this specimen 3.67 g.

Catalog reference: KM-218; Sieg-8; Lange-456; Bruun-14629.
