This specimen was lot 56581 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $30. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. 1/16 Thaler, 1598. Johann Adolf. NGC AU-53." The second specimen was lot 11464 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €240 (about US$250). The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. 1/16 Taler, 1598. Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. Johann Adolf. NGC EF-40. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." The dynastic affairs of this duchy are complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. This obscure type was struck 1594-99. Note the two digit date.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 2.87 g.

Catalog reference: KM-5, Lange-283 cf.; Sieg-6.2; Bruun-14014.
