Stephen Album internet sale 28, lot 959
from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 11472
SB225-11472r.jpg

This specimen was lot 959 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-GOTTORP: Johann Adolf, 1590-1616, AR 1/24 thaler (1)601. IOH.ADOL.D.G.DVX.SCHLES.* // MONE.NOVA.SCLE.(two ornaments), F-VF, ex H. G. Oldenburg Auction, March 1994, Lot 1507 (with old ticket)." This denomination was struck in two styles; this one, struck 1601-03 with the legend "MONE·NOVA·SCLE·", and KM 7, mentioning emperor Rudolf II, struck 1600-03. We don't know why the engravers omitted the first digit of the date. John Adolf was also bishop of Lübeck 1586-1607 and archbishop of Bremen 1589-96. He was forced to resign the archbishopric on succeeding to the duchy. The dynastic affairs of this duchy are complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. The second specimen was lot 11472 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €65 (about US$68). The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. 1/24 Taler, (1)601. Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. Johann Adolf. NGC AU-55. From the L. E. Bruun Collection."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.05 g, silver, 20.8 mm diameter. The second specimen 1.75 g.

Catalog reference: KM-8var, Lange-300var. The second specimen KM-8; Sieg-4.8; Bruun-14062.
