This specimen was lot 29874 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $2,350. The catalog description[1] noted, "Saxony. Johann Proof Convention Taler 1854-F PR66 Cameo PCGS. With striking design features that sit atop lightly-toned fields that display a tremendous amount of lustrous reflectivity. Not surprising, this premium gem is the currently the only certified example of this one-year type in a Proof designation, unique as such. Ex. Ernst Otto Horn Collection." The year 1854 was a busy one for the Dresden mint, producing four different thalers, all common except for Johann's mining thaler (Dav-884).

Recorded mintage: 525,000 plus 27,000 mining thalers (Dav-884) and 16,000 death thalers (Dav-881) plus 1,075,000 for Friedrich August II (Dav-880).

Specification: 22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver, .536 troy oz ASW, lettered edge.
