Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70778

This specimen was lot 70778 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1808-SGH. Dresden Mint. Friedrich August I. NGC AU-50. This handsome looking example offers much originality and is pleasing to the eye. The strike is good with even wear primarily contained to the high points and exposed areas displaying light attractive gray tone. An iridescent sheen of sunsets hues accentuates the devices adding to its pleasing appearance." This type was struck 1806-17, along with a mining thaler (Dav-855), and is fairly common. Saxony struck convention thalers until 1839, when it converted to the reichsthaler standard used in Prussia (22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver).
