Saxony 1708-ILH thaler Dav-2650
This specimen was lot 379 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 28,000 CHF (about US$42,672 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, Albertiner, Friedrich August I. 1694-1733. Taler 1708 ILH, Dresden. Geharnischtes Brustbild nach rechts mit Lorbeerkranz und umgelegtem Mantel. Rv. Gekröntes Monogramm AR, zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl, unten die Signatur I. L. H. und Zainhaken (Johann Lorenz Holland, Münzmeister in Dresden 1698-1716). Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. NGC MS64. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. Diesen Talertyp liess Friedrich August prägen, nachdem er am 24. September 1706 auf die polnische Königskrone im Frieden von Altranstädt verzichten musste. Auf diesem Stück erscheint deshalb nur der allgemeine Königstitel REX. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. Hinweis: Zwei Medaillen in Silber und Zinn 1711, von C. Wermuth, auf das Interregnum nach dem Tod des Kaisers Joseph I. mit den Medaillons der drei Reichsvikare Friedrich August I. von Sachsen und Polen, Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz und Victor Amadeus von Savoyen im Kurornat, siehe Los.-Nrn. 840 und 841. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Frederick Augustus I, 1694-1733, thaler of 1708, Dresden mint. Obverse: laureate, mantled and armored bust right. Reverse: Crowned monogram "AR," with the split date to the sides; below, the signature "I. L. H." and a mint hook (Johann Lorenz Holland, Mint Master in Dresden, 1698–1716). Very rare in this condition, Finest certified by NGC. Beautiful condition with magnificent patina. Friedrich August commissioned the striking of this Thaler type after he was compelled to renounce the Polish royal crown on September 24, 1706, under the terms of the Peace of Altranstädt. Consequently, this specimen bears only the generic royal title "REX." Note: Two medals in silver and pewter (1711) by C. Wermuth—commemorating the Interregnum following the death of Emperor Joseph I and featuring medallions of the three Imperial Vicars (Friedrich August I of Saxony and Poland, Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate, and Victor Amadeus of Savoy) in their electoral regalia—are listed as lots 840 and 841.)"
