from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70159

This specimen was lot 70159 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2020), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1606-HR. Dresden Mint. Christian II, Johann Georg I & August. NGC MS-62. Incredible quality for the type, this near choice example--tied with just one other for the finest in the NGC census--offers deep gray surfaces with a good deal of lustrous brilliance remaining." The SCWC notes this type for 1604-11. A double thaler exists (Dav-7565) but is rare.
