Saxony 1597-HB 2 thaler Dav-9819
This specimen was lot 4404 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,503 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM Christian II., Johann Georg I. und August, 1591-1611. Dicker doppelter Reichstaler 1597, Dresden. RR Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Westfälische Auktionsgesellschaft 12, Dortmund 1998, Nr. 1645. (electorate of Saxony, Christian II, John George I and August, 1591-1611, thick double thaler of 1597, Dresden mint. Very rare, very fine.)"
This type was struck 1591-1601, all with mintmaster HB. All the dates are rare. Altho the auctioneer's photo clearly establishes this specimen as a double thaler, the reported weight is that of a regular single thaler.
