Saxony 1539 thaler Dav-9721
This specimen was lot 359 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$686 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, ab 1806 Königreich. Ernestiner, Johann Friedrich und Georg, 1534-1539. Taler 1539, Annaberg. Münzmeister Wolf Hünerkopf, Münzzeichen Morgenstern. Sehr schön. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John Frederick and George, 1534-39, thaler of 1539, Annaberg mint, morning star mintmark. Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1534-39 at Annaberg and Freiburg. The Ernestine and Albertine lines had already divided by 1539 but were still issuing joint coinages. On the death of Johann Friedrich I in 1552, Johann Friedrich II partitioned ducal Saxony with his brothers, initiating the fragmentation of that state.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.89 g.
