Künker Auction 441, lot 4386

This specimen was lot 4386 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,926 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM Johann Friedrich der Großmütige und Georg, 1534-1539. Taler 1538, Buchholz. Mit Münzmeisterzeichen T. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Min. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion WAG Online 19, Mai 2019, Nr. 1086. (electorate of Saxony, John Frederick the Magnanimous and George, 1534-39, thaler of 1538, Buchholz mint, mintmark T. Rare in this quality, minor planchet defects, extremely fine.)"

The Ernestine line was the senior branch of Saxon dukes and held the electoral cap until the capture of Johann Friedrich in 1547, when the emperor confiscated the cap and awarded it to the Albertine line. Thereafter, the Thuringian state splintered into the Saxon duchies. This type was struck 1534-38.
