Künker sale 400, lot 200

This specimen was lot 200 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €19,000 (about US$24,649 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich III. der Weise und Johann, 1486-1525. Taler 1525, Buchholz. Brustbild Friedrichs III. mit Mütze r. umher doppelter Schriftkreis//Brustbild Johanns l. umher doppelter Schriftkreis. Mit römischer Jahreszahl in der Rückseitenumschrift. Äußerst selten in dieser Erhaltung. Ungewöhnlich sauber ausgeprägtes Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der westfälischen Privatsammlung „Mehrfachportraits auf Münzen und Medaillen". (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Frederick II the Wise and John, 1486-1525, thaler of 1525, Buchholz mint. Obverse: double obverse legend, capped bust of Frederick right; reverse: double reverse legend, bust of John left, date in Roman numerals in legend. Extremely rare in this quality, unusually nice with handsome toning, about extremely fine.)"

Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. Davenport lists this type for 1525 for the Ernestine dukes Friedrich and Johann I. The emperor confiscated the electoral cap from Johann Friedrich in 1547 and awarded it to his Albertine cousin Moritz.
