Künker sale 293, lot 1288

This specimen was lot 1288 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,900 (about US$3,909 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, SACHSEN-WEIMAR, HERZOGTUM, AB 1741 SACHSEN, Johann Ernst und seine fünf Brüder, 1622-1626. Reichstaler 1626, Weimar, auf den Tod von Johann Ernst. RR Attraktives, sehr schönes Exemplar mit hübscher Patina. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Weimar, John Ernest and his five brothers, 1622-26, thaler of 1626, Weimar mint, on the death of John Ernest. Rare, attractive, very fine example with handsome patina.)"

This particular permutation of Saxe-Weimar, known as Saxe-Middle-Weimar, lasted 1605-40. This "death" thaler is listed as rare.
