Saxe-W-Eisenach SB517-20405r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20405 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. 2/3 Taler, 1764-K FS. Eisenach Mint. Anna Amalia (1758-75). PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder. Sharply struck and highly lustrous with flashy proof-like surfaces. Light attractive mottled tone showing hues of red, blue and brown-yellow." Altho this is listed as a two-thirds thaler (probably because of the conspicuous "⅔" on the reverse), the weight is that of a half convention thaler ("XX. EINE FEINE MARCK") and we are listing it here as such. As the reichs thaler was superseded by the convention thaler, the thaler was revalued from ninety kreuzer to 120 kreuzer. The gulden, fixed at sixty kreuzer, therefore slipped from two-thirds thaler, its value in the seventeenth century, to half a thaler. Anna Amalia was the regent for the duke and issued an extensive series of coins, one of the few featuring female rulers in Germany. We note this gulden or half thaler (KM 125.2) struck 1763-65 plus KM 125.1 and 125.3, plus a five thaler (Fr-3043), thaler (Dav-2759A), 1/6 thaler (KM 121) and 1/3 thaler (KM 123.1 and 123.2).

Recorded mintage: 5,000, including KM 125.1 and KM 125.3.

Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-125.2.
