Künker sale 335, lot 4350
Saalfeld in 1789

This specimen was lot 4350 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €600 (about US$785 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, SACHSEN-SAALFELD, HERZOGTUM, AB 1735 SACHSEN-, Johann Ernst VIII. 1680-1729. 1/8 Reichstaler 1725, Saalfeld. R Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Saalfeld, John Ernest VIII, 1680-1729, one-eighth thaler of 1725, Saalfeld mint. Scarce, handsome patina, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1725-28 and accompanied a similar thaler (Dav-2747). It is expensive for an obscure German minor.

Specification: 3.65 g, 0.888 fine silver, 25 mm diameter, this specimen 3.69 g.
