Künker Auction 426, lot 3821

This specimen was lot 3821 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €350 (about US$496 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-COBURG-EISENACH, HERZOGTUM Johann Casimir und Johann Ernst, 1572-1633. Reichstaler 1578, Saalfeld. Variante mit IMPREI in der Rückseitenumschrift. Sehr schön. (duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach, John Casimer and John Ernest, 1572-1633, thaler of 1578, Saalfeld mint, with "IMPREI" in the reverse legend. Very fine.)"

Davenport lists this type for 1577-86 and notes it as fairly common. The division of Erfurt in 1572 permanently splintered Ernestine Thuringia into fragments which were not reunited until the establishment of the Weimar Republic in 1920.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, this specimen 28,72 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB82, Dav-9756 A; Schnee 170; Kozinowski/Otto/Ruß 8.2 b.
