Saxe-Hildburghausen 1708-HEA thaler Dav-2728
This specimen was lot 1068 in Sincona sale 50 (Zürich, October 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Sachsen-Hildburghausen, Herzogtum. Ernst, 1680-1715. Taler 1708, Coburg. Auf die Einsetzung seines Sohnes Ernst Friedrich als Nachfolger. Die geharnischten Brustbilder von Ernst und seinem Sohn, Erbprinz Ernst Friedrich, mit Allongeperücken nebeneinander nach rechts. Rv. Sechsfach behelmtes, 18-feldiges Wappen, darunter zwei gekreuzte Zainhaken und die Signatur H - E - A (Münzmeister Heinrich Ernst Angerstein). Äusserst selten. Feine Patina. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler am Rand. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Hildburghausen, Ernest, 1680-1715, thaler of 1708, Coburg mint. On the designation of his son Ernest Frederick as his heir. Obverse: armored busts of the duke and his son in full wigs; reverse: six-fold helmeted arms; below, two crossed axes and the mintmaster's initials. The SCWC catalogs this as KM 6 or 7, altho neither are pictured. The Saxe-Hildburghausen line lasted 1680-1826 when the duke traded it to Saxe-Meiningen for Saxe-Altenburg.
Recorded mintage: unknown but few.
