This specimen was lot 4524 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €2,300 (about US$3,164 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-GOTHA, HERZOGTUM, AB 1672 SACHSEN-GOTHA-ALTENBURG Friedrich II., 1691-1732. Reichstaler 1723, Gotha. Familientaler. RR Feine Patina, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Cayon Numismatica, Madrid 2010, Nr. 1617. (duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Frederick II, 1691-1732, "family" thaler of 1723, Gotha mint. Very rare, fine patina, extremely fine.)"
Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was created in 1672 when the duke of Saxe-Gotha inherited the duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, whose ruler had died without heirs. The two duchies were officially merged in 1680 and the new state remained intact until 1825. The SCWC notes almost no coinage for this state between the death of Frederick I (1691) and the series issued for the Reformation bicentennial (1717). This rare thaler celebrates the duke's six brothers.
