(duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Frederick II, 1691-1732, thaler of 1707, Gotha mint, on the death of the duke's brother John William on August 15. Extremely rare, small mount mark, fields smoothed, otherwise extremely fine. According to Dr. Steguweit, only 100 specimens were struck. Johann Wilhelm died on August 15, 1707, during the Battle of Toulon, after being struck by a musket shot beneath his left eye.)"

Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was created in 1672 when the duke of Saxe-Gotha inherited the duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, whose ruler had died without heirs. The two duchies were officially merged in 1680 and the new state remained intact until 1825. The SCWC notes almost no coinage for this state between the death of Frederick I (1691) and the Reformation bicentennial (1717).

Recorded mintage: 100.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29,13 g.
