Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74577
SB924-74577r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74577 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Eisenberg. 8 Pfennig, 1683. Christian. PCGS MS-62. A nicely centered little coin with original surfaces and a slight strike weakness on the obverse. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This specimen was offered again as lot 38394 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $216. Wikipedia comments, "Established in 1680 for Christian, fifth son of Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha, the Duchy consisted of Eisenberg and the towns of Ronneburg, Roda and Camburg. Upon his death in April 1707, as he had no male heirs, the lands were passed to Saxe-Hildburghausen." The coinage of this shortlived state is scarce to rare. The wear on the duke's bust shows why facing portraits are rare on coinage.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 17, Merseburger-3528.
