This specimen was lot 827 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAXE-COBURG-GOTHA: Ernst II, 1844-1893, AE pfennig, Dresden, 1868, mintmaster initial B, a superb proof quality example! NGC graded PF65 RB." This type was struck again in 1870. Germany was unified in 1871 and in 1873 a coinage reform swept away all the pfennigs, kreuzers, groschen, gulden and batzen of the old system. Duke Ernst was the older brother of prince Albert, husband to queen Victoria. This tiny state was merged with the other Saxon duchies into the state of Thuringia in 1920.
Recorded mintage: 199,500.
Specification: 1.49 g, copper.
