Saxe-Coburg-Gotha 1831 20 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 1293 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €80 (about US$108 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE-COBOURG-GOTHA, Ernst Ier (1826-1844), 20 Kreuzer, 1831, Gotha. Nettoyé. Fines griffes. presque Superbe. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Ernest I, 1826-44, twenty kreuzer of 1831, Gotha mint. Cleaned, fine scratches, about Extremely Fine.)"
This Thuringian duchy was formed when the duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg died in 1826 and the duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld traded Saalfeld for Gotha. The result survived until the end of the Wilhelmine empire in 1918. The duke struck twenty kreuzer in various forms 1827-36 with this type listed for 1831 and 1834.
