Saxe-Alt-Weimar 1579 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 52250 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Weimar. 1/2 Taler, 1579. Saalfeld Mint. Friedrich Wilhelm I, with Johann II. PCGS AU-55. This charming Half Taler is completely struck, and retains a rich eye appeal. Limited signs of handling are seen, with rich brilliance throughout. An appealing piece that is certain to be much demanded." This type was also struck in 1581. The division of Erfurt in 1572 permanently splintered Ernestine Thuringia into fragments which were not reunited until the establishment of the Weimar Republic in 1920. The duchy of Saxe-Weimar was created and fell extinct three times. This issue is from the first creation, "Saxe-Old Weimar".
Recorded mintage: unknown.
