Savoy 1648 4 scudi d'oro Fr-1071
This specimen was lot 42374 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $9,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Alluring Gold Multiple from the House of Savoy, ITALY. Savoy. 4 Scudi d'Oro, 1648. Turin or Chambéry Mint. Carlo Emanuele II, with Maria Cristina as Regent. PCGS AU-50. Very well centered and pleasingly struck, this hammered multiple in gold displays very little in the way of circulation or handling. Some muted brilliance is observed, but the hue is golden-yellow and engaging. SCARCE and rather difficult to encounter, making the present piece one that simply cannot be missed by the collectors of this duchy which would produce the future kings of a united Italy." This scarce issue is one of a series of gold coins minted by the regent for her son Charles Emanuel, including four and eight scudi. The four scudi was often called a quadrupla. Many varieties exist in the legends and the shape of the arms; KM 193 (shown here) is listed for 1641, 1643-44 and 1648. None of the silver or gold coins of Savoy of the seventeenth century can be called common. In 1714, the duke's successful participation in the War of the Spanish Succession garnered him the island of Sicily, which he traded for Sardinia in 1720.
