The years 1811-1819 were the first years of liberation during the struggle for independence from Spain. The first republican coinage was issued during this period of 'La Patria Boba', except for the interval 1817-1818, when Royalists took brief control. The royalists also produced coinage from areas which were under their control longer, such as Santa Marta.

Shown is a silver two reales issued in Santa Marta in 1820 as emergency or siege coinage during the years the Royalists resisted invasion by Republican forces. It was lot 23704 and sold on April 15, 2011 for $3,450 at the 2011 April Rosemont Signature World & Ancient Coins CICF Auction #3014 by Heritage Auctions. The catalog description reads: "Santa Marta silver 2 Reales 1820, VF25 NGC, Royalist - only such silver emission. Historically most important, particularly given its weight, as an emergency war issue. Ex-Henry Christensen(1981). From The Dana Roberts Collection."

Recorded mintage: unknown.
