San Marino 1982-R 500 lire KM-139
This specimen was lot 36522 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAN MARINO. 500 Lire, 1982. Rome Mint. PCGS PROOF-67 Deep Cameo." San Marino is in the Italian Apennines and is a protectorate of Italy but remains independent. This type was struck in Rome. San Marinan circulating coinage was based on the lira but gold commemoratives were usually one, two or five scudi. This one honors the liberator of Italy, Giuseppe Garibaldi. Another 500 lire struck in 1982 is among the first bimetallic coins struck (KM 140). San Marino now uses the euro.
