San Marino SB518-71512r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71512 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $40. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAN MARINO. 5 Lira, 1931-R. NGC MS-62. First date of a type struck 1931-38. Toned." This type was struck in Rome for the tiny republic of San Marino in 1931-38. The mintage is low but many were saved as souvenirs so the type is available in lightly circulated condition. It is accompanied by silver ten (KM 10) and twenty lire (KM 11). The SCWC awards this date a premium which is not reflected in the price realized.

Recorded mintage: 50,000.

Specification: 5 g, 0.835 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: KM-9; Mont-35, Gig-18.
