This specimen was part of lot 955 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), which sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$3,048 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"[[SAMOA Malietoa Tanumafili II. seit 1962. Proof Set 1988, The Singapore Mint. The Kon-Tiki Proof Set. 100 $ (6.75g Feingold / fine gold), 50 $ (1 oz Feinpalladium / fine palladium) und 10 $ (1 oz Feinsilber / fine silver). Set von 3 Exemplaren. KM PS3 (77, 78, 79). Fr-20, 21. Selten. Polierte Platte. Im Originaletui mit Zertifikat. (3) (kingdom of Samoa, Tanumafili II, since 1962, proof set of 1988, struck at the Singapore mint to commemorate the voyage of the Kon Tiki. Three pieces, Rare, Choice Proof, In original box with certificate.)"
The set also included a 25 tala which did not appear in this sale. The Kon Tiki expedition, mounted in 1947 by Thor Heyerdahl, attempted to prove that the Polynesian culture was South American in origin, not Southeast Asian. This hypothesis won little credence even in Heyerdahl's day.
