Sincona sale 69, lot 1226

This specimen was lot 1226 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAMOA. Malietoa Tanumafili II. seit 1962. 100 Tala 1981. Jahr der Behinderten. Franklin D. Roosevelt. Nur 1'500 Exemplare geprägt. (kingdom of Samoa, Malietoa Tanumafili II, since 1962, 100 tala of 1981, International Year of Disabled Persons, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Only 1'500 pieces struck. NGC PF69 ULTRA CAMEO.)"

This NCLT was accompanied by another 100 tala (KM 45) celebrating the wedding of prince Charles and princess Diana. The Samoan head of state mentioned above, Malietoa Tanumafili II, died in 2007. Since then, the office is no longer elected for life but has rotated between Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi (r. 2007-17) and Tuimalealiifano Va'aletoa Sualauvi II (since 2017).

Recorded mintage: 1500 + 250 uncirculated.
