Samoa 1978 100 tala Fr-5
This specimen was lot 1626 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAMOA: Republic, AV 100 tala, 1978, 50th Anniversary of the Transpacific Flight of Charles Kingsford Smith, mintage of only 1,500 pieces, NGC graded Proof 68 ULTRA CAMEO, Scarce." The Samoan islands were partitioned between Germany (western part) and the United States (the eastern part) in 1899. The Germany colony fell to New Zealand during World War One and was held by them until 1962, when it became independent. Coins of one thru fifty sene circulate, the larger denominations are sold as commemoratives of which this is one. Another 100 tala issued in 1978 honored the XIth Commonwealth Games.
