Samoa 1977 100 tala Fr-4
This specimen was lot 75456 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAMOA. 100 Tala, 1977. Royal Australian Mint. GEM PROOF. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight. In original case with certificate of authenticity. Buttery gold color with deeper toning at the rims. Attractive." The Samoan islands were partitioned between Germany (western part) and the United States (the eastern part) in 1899. The Germany colony fell to New Zealand during World War One and was held by them until 1962, when it became independent. Coins of one thru fifty sene circulate, the larger denominations are sold as commemoratives of which this is one. Another 100 tala issued in 1977 honored the queen's jubilee.
