Salzburg 1792-M thaler Dav-1265
This specimen was lot 45096 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $341.60. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1792-M. Salzburg Mint. Hieronymus von Colloredo-Waldsee. PCGS AU-55. From the John P. Burnham Collection." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1789-1803 and is common. The Archbishop is most remembered as the first patron of Mozart but grew irritable when Mozart demanded better status than a mere employee.
