Salzburg 1703 thaler Dav-1234
This specimen was lot 3265 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €220 (about US$312 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLANDEN, SALZBURG, ERZBISTUM, Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709. Reichstaler 1703. Feine Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler, kl. Kratzer, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709, thaler of 1703. Fine patina, minor planchet defects, hairlines, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1687-1709 and is common. The issues prior to 1701 are listed as Dav-3510.
