This specimen was lot 33337 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria: Salzburg. Johann Ernst 1/4 Taler 1696 MS63 PCGS. Exceptional quality for a fractional taler of the period, cabinet-toned to perfection. Sold with old dealer tag." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1694-96, 1699-1700, 1703-08 and is fairly common.
