Salzburg 1631 1/2 kreuzer
This specimen was part of lot 2845 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €460 (about US$595 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Paris von Lodron, 1619-1653. 1/2 Kreuzer 1623, 1624, 1625, 1629, 1631, 1635, 1643. Probszt 1356, 1357, 1358, 1360, 1362, 1364, 1370; Zöttl 1661, 1662, 1663, 1665, 1667, 1669, 1676. 7 Stück., Meist sehr schön. 1629: Exemplar der Auktion Bankhaus Partin 33, München 1991, Nr. 1274. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Paris von Lodron, 1619-53, half kreuzers of 1623-43. Seven pieces, mostly very fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This seems to be the first issue of this denomination. It was struck 1623-53 and has a low catalog value, which is why the auctioneers threw this example in with six others. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver or billon.
