This specimen was lot 2749 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €160 (about US$207 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, 1612-1619. 1/2 Reichstalerklippe 1612. R Henkelspur, sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Mark Sittich of Hohenems, 1612-19, klippe half thaler of 1612. Rare, mount mark, very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck in round (KM 17) and klippe format (shown here) in 1612. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 14.06 g.

Catalog reference: KM 18 (klippe format), Probszt 977; Zöttl 1182 (Type 3).
