Künker sale 406, lot 4647

This specimen was lot 4647 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €700 (about US$919 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE GEISTLICHKEIT IN DEN HABSBURGISCHEN ERBLANDEN, SALZBURG, Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg, 1519-1540. 1/2 Guldinerklippe 1522. Stempel von Ulrich Ursenthaler d. Ä. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, gestopftes Loch, kl. Kratzer, sehr schön +. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg, 1519-40, klippe half guldiner of 1522. Extremely rare, handsome patina, plugged hole, very fine or better.)"

The archbishop struck half guldiners in numerous styles in 1522; this one is klippe format. Wikipedia comments,

"In the course of the Protestant Reformation Lang's adherence to the older faith, together with his pride and arrogance, made him very unpopular in his Salzburg diocese. As early as in 1523 he was involved in a serious struggle with his subjects in the City of Salzburg, and in 1525, during the German Peasants' War, he had again to fight hard to hold his own. Insurgents occupied the town of Hallein, devastated the archbishop's Burg Hohenwerfen and even laid siege to his residence at Hohensalzburg, until they were finally defeated with the aid of troops provided by the Swabian League."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 6.91 g.
