S'Heerenberg 1578 daalder Dav-8595
This specimen was lot 1132 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €220 (about US$305 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, BERGH, Graafschap, Willem IV (1546-1586), AR daalder, 1578, Dieren. Mmt: granaatappel. Vz/ Geharnast bb. r. met staf, tussen jaartal. Kz/ Gekwartierd wapen gedekt door twee helmen. (Netherlands, county of Bergh, William IV, 1546-86, silver daalder of 1578, Dieren mint, pomegranate mintmark. Obverse: armored bust right with staff, dividing the date; reverse: double helmeted arms. Fine.)"
The count of Bergh (or s'Heerenberg) issued daalders and other silver coins in the fifteenth century before being absorbed into Gelderland, in which province the town still remains. We have filed this coin under Gelderland as the coinage of Bergh is too scanty to warrant its own page. This type was struck 1577-78 and undated.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 23,83 g.
Catalog reference: Delm. 594; Dav-8595; CNM 2.06.32.
