Russia 1839-G ruble Dav-288
This specimen was lot 5171 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €7,000 (about US$9,435 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RUSSLAND, KAISERREICH, Nikolaus I. 1825-1855. Rubel 1839, St. Petersburg, auf die Einweihung des Borodino-Denkmals. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 62 PL. R Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz (empire of Russia, Nicholas I, 1825-55, ruble of 1839, St. Petersburg mint, for the Borodino monument, in NGC MS-62PL holder. Scarce, beautiful patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This type is well out of the reach of ordinary collectors and accompanies the better-known 1½ ruble (Dav-287). It commemorates the Battle of Borodino, where Russian troops defeated Napoleon and forced him to abandon his invasion.
