Jean Elsen sale 124, sale 1588

This specimen was lot 1588 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €95 (about US$119 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RUSSIE, Dmitrij Ivanovitch (Faux Dmitrij) (1605-1606), AR kopeck, après juillet 1605, Pskov. Droit: Le Tsar chevauchant à droite, pointant la lance vers le bas. Sous le cheval, [..]. Revers: Légende en cinq lignes. Très Beau. Ce premier Faux Dmitrij, supporté par les Polonais, prétendait être le fils d'Ivan IV. Il fut assassiné par les bojars qui désignèrent l'un des leurs, Shujskij, pour lui succéder. (Russia, Dmitri Ivanovich (the false Dmitri), 1605-08, silver kopek of 1605, Pskov mint. Obverse: the tsar charges to right, pointing a lance downwards. Reverse: five line inscription. Very fine. The first false Dmitri, supported by the Polish, claimed to be the son of Ivan IV. He was assassinated by the boyars who appointed one of their own, Shuisky, to succeed him.)"

These kopeks were struck from pieces of wire rather than from punched blanks as in western Europe. This was a century before Peter the Great's reform which set 100 kopeks = one ruble.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 0,68 g.

Catalog reference: Melnikova, 1-1; Spassky, pl. 81, 12.
