Rothenburg in 1786, to the east of Hohenlohe

This specimen was lot 1085 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 3,500 CHF (about US$4,625 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Stadt, Dukat 1717, Nürnberg. Auf die 200-Jahrfeier der Reformation. Münzmeister Georg Friedrich Nürnberger. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Künker 267, Osnabrück, September 2015, Los 4984. (Germany, city of Rothenburg on the Tauber, ducat of 1717, Nuremberg mint, on the bicentennial of the Reformation. Very rare, Extremely fine.)"

Rothenburg ob der Tauber was an imperial free city from the early Middle Ages that has spent the last five centuries slowing declining into quaintness. Her coinage in the eighteenth century comprises several ducats and a double ducat (Fr-2599), all rare. Wedged between Hohenlohe and Brandenburg-Ansbach, she was annexed by Bavaria in 1803. It is now a tourist destination for Christmas trinkets. The date is in a chronogram (M-I-V-LV-V-L-I-D-C = MDCCXVII = 1717).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.24 g.

Catalog reference: KM 5, Brozatus 927 (struck in silver), Slg. Opitz 2594, Slg. Erlanger 2137, Fr-2600.
