SB524-32254r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32254 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Rostock. Pfennig, 1800-FL. Rostock Mint. Free City. PCGS MS-62 Brown. Though some striking weakness is evident, this Mint State example nevertheless remains without time spent in commerce." The city of Rostock, long a semi-independent member of the Hanseatic League, was subdued by the duke of Mecklenburg in the late sixteenth century. Occupied at various times by the Danes, Swedes and the French, her importance declined until the Industrial Revolution of the nineteenth century favored her shipyards. No thalers were struck in the eighteenth century and gold issues are very sparse. This type was struck 1796-1802. Towards the end of the eighteenth century, copper began to replace billon in low value denominations in Germany.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not expensive.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM-132.
