Rostock 1639 thaler Dav-5795
This specimen was lot 4367 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €2,650 (about US$3,646 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ROSTOCK, STADT Reichstaler (32 Schilling) 1639, mit Titel Ferdinands III. R Hübsche Patina, sehr schön +. Exemplar der Auktion Schweizerischer Bankverein 42, Basel 1997, Nr. 711 und der Slg. Köhlmoos, Auktion Münzen und Medaillen AG 91, Basel 2001, Nr. 470. (city of Rostock, thaler or 32 schilling of 1639, struck in the name of Ferdinand III. Rare handsome patina, very fine or better.)"
The city of Rostock was under the sovereignty of the dukes of Mecklenburg but claimed the mint right as a member of the Hanseatic League. Her issues in the seventeenth century are sparse and expensive. This very scarce type was also struck in 1637.
