Romania 2011 50 bani
In 2011 Romania issued a commemorative coin dedicated to Mircea the Elder, a voivode who fought the Turks in an attempt to maintain his country's independence. This coin, as with the 50 bani coin of 2010 featuring Aurel Vlaicu, mimics the design of euro coins in an attempt to accustom the population with the new currency, and also observe the public reaction about the person who should represent Romania on the back of the euro coins. The type was included in the mint sets for 2012-16 but this is the only circulation date.
Mircea the Elder
Mircea the Elder (b. 1355 - d January 31, 1418), was a prince of Wallachia between September 23, 1386 - November 1394 and May 1395, and again between January 1397 - 31 January 1418. He opposed the Ottoman Sultan Baiazid I at the Battle of Rovine on May 17, 1395. Mircea the Elder was not only a great military leader, but also an art lover, among other monuments he left is the beautiful Cozia Monastery, where he is buried. The front side of the 50 bani coin depicts the Cozia Monastery.
