This specimen was lot 1256 in Goldberg's NY International sale 58 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "Romania-Republic. Gold 1000 Lei, 2001. 1900th Anniversary of the First Roman-Dacian War. Monument flanked above by cameos. Rev. Trajan's column, value at left, Arms right (). 500 pieces minted. In original case. Brilliant Proof." The post-communist regime in Romania has taken to issuing NCLT's honoring bizarre events and anniversaries. This one marks the 1900th anniversary of a long-forgotten war. Another one thousand lei was struck in 2001 in aluminum for circulation (KM 153).
