CNG Lissner sale, lot 838

This specimen was lot 838 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $907.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ROMANIA, Kingdom. Carol I. 1881-1914. AR 50 Bani. Dated 1894. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64. Coin is a white gem with lustrous prooflike obverse and satiny white reverse. Purchased from Bob Van Bebber, January 1983." This type was struck in Bucharest 1894 and 1900-01 to the standard of a French silver fifty centimes. It is common, tho this specimen sold for ten times the catalog value. Prince Carol was promoted to king in 1881.

Recorded mintage: 600,000.
