Riga 1520 ferding
This specimen was lot 1361 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "LIVONIAN ORDER: Jasper Linde and Walther von Plettenberg, 1509-1524 and 1494-1535, AR ferding, 15Z0, order cross with date above and arms of the archbishop and master below with IASPER ARCHIEPS ET MGGR LIV around // Madonna and Child with SALVA NOS - DOMINA around, some marginal weakness, nice coloration, F-VF, R." Riga, a Hanseatic town, vigorously attempted to remain independent but fell under the control of the local bishop. Clerical rule ended with the coming of the Reformation and Riga was briefly independent before being incorporated in 1582 into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and, by extension, the kingdom of Poland. Riga was taken by the Swedes in 1629 and by the Russians in 1721. Riga is today the capital of Latvia.
