Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 1787

This specimen was lot 1787 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIVONIE, RIGA, Archevêché, Jasper Linde (1515-1521), AR Ferding, 1516. Monnayage commun avec Walter von Plettenberg. D/ Deux écu accolés, posés sur une croix longue, sous la date. R/ La Madone à l'Enfant. presque Très Beau. (Livonia, archbishopric of Riga, Jasper Linde, 1515-21, silver ferding of 1516, joint issue with Walter f Plettenberg. Obverse: two accolated shields over a long cross, date above. reverse: Madonna and Child. about Very Fine.)"

Riga, a Hanseatic town, vigorously attempted to remain independent but fell under the control of the local bishop. Clerical rule ended with the coming of the Reformation and Riga was briefly independent before being incorporated in 1561 into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and, by extension, the kingdom of Poland. Riga was taken by the Swedes in 1629 and by the Russians in 1721. Riga is today the capital of Latvia.
