Riga (16)44 1/24 thaler
This specimen was lot 11288 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €85 (about US$89). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 1/24 Taler, 1644. Riga Mint. Kristina. NGC MS-62. Variation with (SVEC.) From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Gotthard Minus Collection Vienna-1874) Lot # 4871." This type was struck by the city of Riga 1644 and 1647-49 while under Swedish occupation. It is common. Numista lists this as a three polker. The city later returned to Polish rule but was contested between Poland, Sweden and Russia for the next century, Russia emerging the eventual victor. Riga is today the capital of Latvia.
