This specimen was lot 73586 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "RHODESIA & NYASALAND. Penny, 1962. PCGS SPECIMEN-65 Red Gold Shield. Emanating from the penultimate year of issue, this vibrant Gem is exceeded in the PCGS census by just five specimens. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was a shortlived grouping of the British colonies of Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), Southern Rhodesia (later Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe) and Nyasaland (now Malawi). Formed in 1953, it was very much a shotgun marriage, the black-dominated Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland wanting to have nothing to do with white-dominated Southern Rhodesia. Zambia and Malawi left in 1964, and Rhodesia declared independence in 1965, terminating the federation. This type is known for 1955-63 and is common. The hole served two purposes: one, to prevent confusion with a higher denomination coin; two, to prevent natives from drilling their own holes when stringing them on necklaces.

Recorded Mintage: 6,000,000.

Specification: 6.3 g, bronze, 27 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-2.
